Audi TT wins Drive award? Huh?
I had to look twice at this one. The Audi TT has won an Aussie Car of the Year award from Drive.com.au Now they go on an on about their criteria and say it's really, really fair, but maybe if your criteria are all wrong it doesn't matter what you come up with it'll still look wrong. How exactly does a bland Audi coupe "advance the breed"? Well they tell you at length but at no stage - barring when they mention fuel prices - do they let on that they actually ignore the world around them and judge the cars on lofty personal ideals of "engineering" and "dynamics". The Yaris can't win because it's "underpowered". Who cares if "underpowered" is thrifty and represents the future - not these journos! That the TT uses more aluminium - sometimes known as liquid electricity - is seen as a great thing, and another "achievement". Folks, judicious use of all materials is a great thing, but wasting the world's resources on extravagant affluence - and encouraging it - is surely pushing a dead dog up a hill in 2006. Catch up with the world, guys. Ah well, the climate may change but journos don't.
