Historical interest only! And in memory of Keith Harris and (more recently) Bryan Martin.
Anyway, the only thing I have to say is I hope everyone has a memorable Christmas and an exciting New Year.
Take care and be careful on the roads.
Dave Mackey.
On behalf of myself and my wife Pauline, and all other Club Officials, their wives, husbands and families, may I wish all members and their families a peaceful, happy and successful Christmas and New Year. I hope that all of you gain the serenity to accept the things that you can't change, the courage to change the things you should change and the wisdom to know the difference between the two.
Keith Harris.
Club President Xmas '96.
The Sprints were to be held on the 19th of November, but, due to lousy weather they were washed out and held on the 26th. Again, Randwick Botany riders rode extremely well.
James Stevens came from behind and won the U19 Sprint and received a Gold medal for his efforts. Shaun Hosking finished 2nd and Ben Kersten 3rd in the U17 Sprint securing Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
Congratulations to all those Riders!!!!!
Sunday mornings meet at the Tech College Gates at Centennial Park at 6.30am.
For further details contact either Steve Hogg or Dave Mackey.
From our National medal winners down to our riders who battle each week to complete in 'D' and sometimes 'E' grade, the feeling of cameraderie and Club spirit seems to me, to have grown stronger as we have progressed through the year.
As the new President, I would like to place on record, my admiration and appreciation of the work done by our previous President, Ken Cridland. Ken (or'Criddo' as he is generally known) had four years as President and during that time, his energy and dedi cation were quite remarkable. It would be impossible to list all of the innovations and achievements that he accomplished in that time, but one thing must surely stand out, and that is the fight that he and other sports Officials successfully waged to prevent us losing large areas of Heffron Park to commercial interests wishing to build a golf driving range.
Ken has stood down as President to devote more time to his young family and other interests, and on behalf of us all, Ken, thank you thank you and once again thank you for all your work over the last four years.
1994/95 has seen us achieve great success in our sport. At the end of'94, our then U15 rider Shaun Hosking dominated the 'Metro' Track Titles and followed those successes with State Title medals at the U15 events held in 40 degree temperatures at Mudgee.
Shaun's successes were followed by the Bronze medal won by James Stevens in the State U17 track Time Trial.
Our other Junior riders, although they did not win any medals in the Individual events, rode with a tough attacking style , which brought many favourable comments by the Track Announcers and the trackside crowd.
When the Teams Pursuit events came on, our U17 team of Joel Xuereb, James Stevens, Michael Pitts and Alex Havas, powered through the qualifying round, blew their opposition away in the Semi's and then faced the strong St. George team in the Final. We were beaten by St. George and had to settle for the Silver Medal, however our defeat was not felt quite so badly when we learned that the winning team had broken the State record in order to beat us.
As the road season started, I was amazed at the number ofriders who had entered most of the major road races including the Central Coast Tour, the Canberra Milk Race, Coonabarabran to Gunnedah, Gunnedah to Tamworth and a heap of other races. Our riders co ming from the U17 through to the Seniors and Veteran levels rode these races with great enthusiasm, guts and great skill.
I won't try and list the placings and finishing positions of our members (but you know who you are and well done too! - Ed.) but I offer to all those members who participated in this years road opens my most sincere congratulations!!
With the teams time trial events being held at Calga we were able to field a strong U17 Team of Shaun Hosking, Alex Havas, James Stevens and Joel Xuereb. Again the Gold medal eluded us! The Wagga team were successful in a remarkably quick time, but we had the satisfaction of relegating the St. George team to third place, although our margin over St. George was just one second, a very slim margin indeed over 20km.
When State Road Title time came along, our members had a solid season of hard racing behind them and although we had many starters in all divisions, success was not to be ours, but with one very notable exception - Joel Xuereb. In a brilliant ride, Joel c aptured the Bronze medal in the U17 Time Trial. This result, together with a stack of placings in the '95 road Opens, gained him selection in the NSW State Team to contest the'Aussie Titles' in Hahndorf S.A. After a tough and hairy road title race, Joel a nd three other breakaway riders fought out a very wild and wooly final sprint with the Bronze medal going to Joel.
With the end ofthe road season we found we had enquiries from riders from other clubs who were interested in joining up with us, this being due to the reputation our Club had gained throughout the year, and the success we had achieved in our Junior develo pment and coaching areas.
I would Like to welcome our new members and their families - Alf, Val and Christine Long (exPenrith Panthers), David and Neil Fisher (exNorthern Suburbs), Katherine Davis (Ex- St. George and Lismore), Barry, Helen, Joshua, Tim and Ben Kersten (ex-MacCarth ur).
The Kersten family are one ofthe most successful families in cycling with older brother Simon (Coach of the younger brothers) being a State, National and International medal winner. Josh is a State and National medallist and being current "World Junior Ch ampion" in the 1000m Time Trial and Sprint events. Tim is a State and current National U17 dual Track Charhpion, with younger brother Ben (now U17 division) the U15 State and National Road and Criterium Champion.
I must say that all our new members are a really good bunch of 'Guys and Gals', and are a most welcome addition to our club.
Within the next few weeks you will notice that certain members ofthe club will be wearing Club Jerseys which are different to our regular jerseys and knicks.
These jerseys and skin suits are designed to recognise our Cycling Federation 'A' grade riders. They are not costing the club any money as they are sponsored clothing.
I feel that with the amount of training, gym work, racing and extra effort that our Federation 'A' graders put in, that they are worthy of such recognition, and that the provision of special clothing may spur our promising other riders to extra effort in order for them to also gain A grade status.
To finish the year, our riders gained great success in the recent Metro Track Titles.
Keith Harris.
President.
