Rob's Disturbing Guide to Handling, Modifying and Enjoying Your Car... Twin camshaft motorsTwin cams were introduced to Grand Prix racing in 1923 by Peugeot. And yes, they had a 16 valve variant as well. 2 years later Alfa Romeo was into it as well. So if you thought Toyota was onto something new, think again! This arrangement gives the engine designer the option of reducing rotating mass within the valvetrain, thereby increasing the likelihood of a sporty, high revving motor. (Not necessarily a good characteristic, btw, particularly if towing a load is your aim.) It frees up cylinder head design to a degree as well - making space for more interesting and possibly more efficient designs - and generally makes good sense. It can be heavier overall, though, and inevitably more complex than a single cam design. Alfa for one have traditionally embraced the concept with both race and road cars and generally popularised it, although Toyota has taken the marketing spin to ridiculously new heights since the late 1980s. |
