Vigilant vs operational leaders

Excellent Wharton article on Vigilant vs Operational
leaders which touches on Ford vs Toyota (guess which type of leader is which) as well as
Coke vs Pepsi in India and the lighting manufacturers missing the switch to
LEDs. Essentially the article distinguishes between looking just at the
operational issues of lower cost production and matching the competitors
you know, vs looking outside at a broader range of influences and moving
earlier. Makes sense to me.

Driving whinge take 3,000

OK, so I drove to work again. Must stop doing this. First thing, gigantic cars, like trucks. Why are people driving around teh city in these monsters. A Range Rover went past, brand spanking new, gleaming, speeding... just one on board. Sure, if you've got it, flaunt it... but don't you start to feel guilty about this utter waste of resources? Do you feel no shame? Maybe when global warming actually starts to hurt you'll go 'why did I do that?'. More likely most people will go 'why did they let me do that?' Because it's never our fault, it's always the government to blame beacsue we bought trucks instead of cars, or massive houses on small blocks well away from railway lines. Free will? Democracy? Responsibility? Ha! No, it comes down to blame, doesn't it. Who do we blame when we get it wrong. Why not take the initiative and make your own choices instead? Catch that train. Buy a smaller house close to transport. Buy a small car. Fume. Literally.

The Web as associative memory

Making sense of where we are heading... what does it mean, to have all of these people linked by wires? I recently hosted a reunion of my classmates from 1975 online, by blog, website and forum. We had met irregularly over 30 years, but now we leverage the INternet to stay connected - some of us anyway - on a daily basis. We have gathered as people, shared our memories and our photographs. It's a powerful example of how the word has become more connected, and quite humbling to think that one person could serendipitously have the skills to kick it off. In the future it will be expected that this is how it will be...

Just to expand upon this line of thinking, Jon Udell wrote this in his InfoWorld blog:

"I'm subscribed to hundreds of blogs, and I'm starting to think of the people who write them as a kind of neural network whose filters and amplifiers help me make sense of our increasingly complex information landscape.
But that's really just a metaphor. What actually happens is that I scan my feeds, absorb what I can, and bookmark what I might want to return to. Because I post my bookmarks to del.icio.us, and because other people do too, we have the beginnings of a shared memory. And because we tag our items, it's even a kind of associative memory. But del.icio.us only knows about the things we take the trouble to post and tag.
What if the entire blogosophere was, automatically, an associative memory? And what if the associations were driven by a combination of freetext and structured search? "

Bravo. Since 1995 I have been slowly leaking my entire life onto the Web. Carefully, judiciously. Increasingly others are sharing what they know and do, with me, with many people. And as the web grows and new tools emerge we see new possibilities for this network of online minds...

Mythoblogia

I've started yet another blog - Mythoblogia - to get my love of myths and legends 'out there'. I need to get this out of my system. I need to talk about and explain the inexplicable. That's why I also write about bike racing :)

These posts represent my opinions only and may have little or no association with the facts as you see them. Look elsewhere, think, make up your own minds. If I quote someone else I attribute. If I recommend a web site it's because I use it myself. If an advert appears it's because I affiliate with Google and others similar in nature and usually means nothing more than that... the Internet is a wild and untamed place folks, so please tread warily. My opinions are just that and do not constitute advice or legal opinion of any sort.
